Background

In early 1961, on a misty Belgian motorway between Antwerp and Herenthal, a young motoring journalist called Peter Riviere strapped himself into a prototype sports car and hurtled down the motorway in front of assembled journalists. His average speed for the run was 150.4 mph and the car was a hand built forerunner of the Jaguar E type and when it was launched to the public later in the year, no other car could come close to matching its performance or price. So the legend of the E type began.

Launched with a 3.8 litre engine driving through a 4 speed gearbox, the monocoque stressed steel body was supported by a front suspension of independent wishbones and torsion bars with Girling gas cell dampers. At the rear, independent lower wishbones and fixed length drive shafts and longitudinal radius arms combined with twin coil spring and Girling gas cell telescopic dampers at each side. Steering was Alford and Alder rack and pinion.

Recognised even by the great Enzo Ferrari as one of the most beautiful cars ever built, the Jaguar E Type developed over the years with increasing engine sizes and different models but the original 3.8 litre remains the purest form of the original design and the most popular among collectors.

Summary

From its very early days, the Jaguar E Type has always been a sought-after car - and that status as many people’s dream car is as pertinent today as it was at launch in 1961.

With stunning performance to match its good looks, 909 PBP's repeated success in the Brooklands Double Twelve Concours is unsurprising and any new owner can be assured of a car to enjoy, a car take pride in and a car ready for future competition.

This is an opportunity to acquire one of the greatest modern classic and an icon of the sixties.

Vehicle History

The car's folder includes a Certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust that confirms this to be a matching numbers car as well as confirming that it was supplied through Fields Engineering of Crawley in Sussex to its first owner, D S Crowther.

This is all information gleaned by the current owner who is a genuine enthusiast for whom Byron International have marketed a number of cars - the last one being a Concours standard Austin Healey and it is no coincidence that this car's history includes confirmation of competitive Concours entries with places and a win!

The car has been with the current owner since 15th June 2010 when he purchased the car from the previous owner, Peter Gray of Andover. Peter Gray's business was heavy trucks but he had a passion for the E type and, with the proximity of Thruxton Race Circuit had commissioned Tony Shaw, who was based at the circuit, to rebuild the engine and gearbox.

Tony is no longer with us but had a massive reputation as a racer and engineer and even today, one of his apprentices, Jestyn Thomas continues his good work a Thruxton Classic Restorations.

The car has been maintained to the very highest of standards - while present owner lived in London, this was conducted by Bill Rawles Classic Cars in Four Marks but since living in Norfolk, servicing duties have transferred to Bryan Wilson and his staff at Henries of Sheringham - they are a Ford dealer but Bryan has a number of E Types as personal cars and his team have a shared knowledge and passion for the model.
